The Wall Street Journal has learnt Apple will make significant design changes to its next-generation iPhones, but only because of a serious design flaw.
The WSJ reveals that Apple will drop LCD displays altogether from next year’s iPhone line-up in favour of OLED. The motivation comes from the need to create a more flexible iPhone design, as well as to boost the iPhone XR, which The WSJ claims has slumped so badly that Japan Display, (the multi-billion dollar LCD maker founded by Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi) needs a bailout to stay afloat.
The problem? In an era of 1080p and 1440p OLEDs, the 720p LCD in the iPhone XR doesn’t cut it with customers – even after Apple’s recent stealth price cuts.
Which is why Apple wants to move all iPhones to OLED, but The WSJ reports the supply chain for this is not yet in place. Consequently, buyers will get a second-generation iPhone XR still stuck with LCD. This causes problems for the whole iPhone range as the iPhone XR was meant to be the primary sales driver.
All of which is rather unfair.
While the iPhone XR display may look poor on paper, in reality it is better than many 1080p rivals. That said, perception is king and that has seen Apple wipe up to $9BN off its next financial quarter – creating a very real problem.
And yet the irony here is there are genuine reasons why some people may not want to buy Apple’s next-gen iPhones. These include questionable design changes, missing connectivity and creepy camera tech, but the bugbear for millions is an LCD display which is actually pretty good.
My tip: be smart, look past the iPhone XR display (it’s still the best value model in the range) and be ready to buy because, with others staying away, Apple looks set to cut prices again.
